What even more undesirable about tension headache is that it not only cause pain and tension to the head, it also cause tightening to the neck and back muscles which then resulted in a painful headache. So what are the tension headache symptoms that one might see? Apart from pain and tension in the neck, back and head, tension headache can also cause emotional fluctuations. Sufferers of tension headache are usually more temperamental, having irresponsible behavior, and that results in lack of energy and attention to accomplish the tasks at hand. Someone in the office with tension headache may find it hard to concentrate and do the job, or student might lose focus in doing their school work. The tension headache attack is usually more gradual than migraine headache and the duration of the pain may range from hours to even years. Sometimes, a migraine headache may even evolve into a tension headache, as both conditions are quite similar and are cause by similar influence such as stress. More often, a sufferer will feel pain almost every day without a break, although the intensity may vary. Tension headaches rarely begin during childhood or adolescence but more commonly during middle age. They are more common in women than men. So when should one consult the doctor for this condition? If one is getting frequent headaches that are interfering with daily life, and that one is experiencing a change in headache frequency, intensity, or pattern, it is time to have medical attention. However, do not indulge in self medication and take excessive amount of pain killer to ease the pain as this will not stop tension headache symptoms. If you are having a severe or constant headache that begins suddenly and is accompanied by weakness, dizziness, numbness or other strange sensations, consult your doctor immediately. If you feel your condition is not too serious and you do not wish to consult a doctor yet, some of the things you can do is firstly, use an ice pack on your head and neck when you experience a tension headache. Also, take a hot shower and get some rest and sleep. Try to maintain consistent sleep pattern but do not oversleep as this might cause migraine. You also need to eat regular meals and take plenty of fluids to prevent your body from dehydration. Lastly, try to reduce stress by regular exercising or other stress management techniques.
